Many patients wonder, can fat grow back after liposuction? Read on to find out from the premier provider of liposuction in Fall River, MA.

Last year, more than 235,000 liposuction procedures were performed in the United States, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Liposuction was one of the top three cosmetic surgical procedures of 2016, as more people recognized the incredible body sculpting benefits of the surgery.

One of the reasons why liposuction is so popular is the immediate results; after removing unwanted body fat, the treated area looks slimmer and more sculpted very quickly.

But how long do the results last? Can fat grow back after liposuction?

Dr. Mark Lowney of Advanced Body Sculpting of New England explains what you need to know here.

PERMANENT REDUCTION IN FAT

Great news: once fat cells are removed from the body via liposuction techniques, those cells cannot grow back. Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from the body.

However, keep in mind that not all of the fat cells in the treated area are removed during a liposuction procedure. The surgeon must keep at least a small layer of fat to maintain a normal-looking body contour.

As long as the patient maintains his or her weight after surgery, liposuction results stay noticeable and dramatic for a very long time.

But it is possible for the remaining fat cells in the body (both in and around the treated area) to enlarge with weight gain. If the patient starts to neglect their exercise routine or diet, and that leads to weight gain, the fat cells get bigger.

Gaining a few pounds won’t completely reverse the effects of liposuction, but the more weight gained, the less noticeable the liposuction results will be.

This is why Dr. Lowney encourages his liposuction patients (and all of his patients) to pay attention to their health and lifestyle habits after surgery. There are many resources available to help patients maintain their weight and enjoy their liposuction results in long term.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommends the following lifestyle changes after liposuction:

  • Follow a healthy, well-balanced diet focused on protein and healthy carbohydrates
  • Watch portion size
  • Don’t skip meals
  • Exercise regularly
  • Stay hydrated
