COSMETIC SURGERY GROWS IN POPULARITY

Cosmetic surgery is becoming the new norm. With nearly two million plastic surgery procedures performed every year in the United States, men and women are taking advantage of modern medicine. Over the last 10 years, the total number of cosmetic surgeries has increased by ninety-eight percent…and it’s not only women who are driving these numbers. About 150,000 men and a quarter of the total number being minorities are having plastic surgery. There are various procedures designed to give a facelift to all parts of the body, but the five below are the most popular cosmetic surgeries:

LIPOSUCTION

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery that can be great for patients who cannot seem to rid themselves of fat in specific areas of the body. There are two types of liposuction: Tumescent and Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction.

Tumescent liposuction is the most popular. A solution of saline, a drug to narrow the blood vessels, and a numbing agent are filled into the treatment area. The liquid and the fat are suctioned out of the body using a small metal instrument. Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction uses the same instrument to release energy to melt the fat so it can be suctioned out of the body. This procedure has more risks than the other option, including the potential for internal/external burns and a longer surgery.

BREAST AUGMENTATION

Cosmetic surgeries on women’s breasts, known as breast augmentation or breast implants, have become vastly popular. More than 350,000 procedures are done every year in the states. Women have augmentations done for various reasons. Many hope to enlarge both breasts, but others hope to replace an absent one or make them equal in size. Some women choose to have breast augmentation because they did not develop during puberty, due to a condition called congenital macromastia.

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF IMPLANTS: SILICONE AND SALINE.

Women report silicone implants feel more natural. The recovery time for this cosmetic surgery can range between one to two weeks. It may take longer to resume high-impact activities.

BLEPHAROPLASTY

Many cosmetic surgery patients struggle with vision. Blepharoplasty is eyelid reshaping surgery and can be done for cosmetic or vision reasons. Often, too much skin or sagging skin can cause a person’s vision to lack…which contributes to the appearance of aging. To gain a more youthful look, puffy lower eyelids or wrinkling can be reduced during cosmetic surgery. The appearance of “bags” are removed as necessary in the lower lid procedure. Most patients recover in about 10 days, and swelling becomes less noticeable in the weeks and months post-surgery.

ABDOMINOPLASTY

A tummy tuck cosmetic procedure is widely popular among women. Abdominoplasty gets rid of excess skin from the stomach area, leaving the skin feeling firm. Excess skin is often leftover after pregnancies or significant weight loss after bariatric surgery. The best candidate for this surgery is one who does not have a lot of fat deposits in the abdomen to remove, but too much skin hanging from the area. Most patients report the recovery time is two to three weeks, but many have to limit their physical activity for longer.

BREAST REDUCTION

Breast reduction surgery can benefit women in several ways. This procedure is one of the few plastic surgeries that insurance does pay for routinely. Women who suffer from heavy or substantial-sized breasts can have a hard time finding clothes that fit or experience chronic pain and bad posture. The surgery can benefit far beyond an improved appearance. Cosmetic surgery is a permanent fix to have asymmetrical breasts. The recovery time is usually around two weeks.
