AM I TOO OLD FOR PLASTIC SURGERY?

How much does the age of a cosmetic surgery candidate matter? As Dr. Mark X. Lowney of Advanced Body Sculpting of New England will explain, age is not a deciding factor. The health and expectations of the individual hold more weight than the date on their birth certificate. In fact, statistics show that older adults are seeking cosmetic surgery in droves. Dr. Lowney explores this trend in more detail.

AGE DOES NOT INCREASE PLASTIC SURGERY RISKS

Research has shown that cosmetic surgery patients over the age of 65 are not at an increased risk because of their age. A team from Vanderbilt University Medical Center looked at data from more than 129,000 patients of all ages that underwent facelifts, liposuction, and other cosmetic surgery procedures. The team found the rate of complications was similar among younger patients (average age of 39) and older patients (average age of 69).

The more important issue is the patient’s health. Men and women seeking cosmetic surgery must be in good physical condition (free of any chronic, uncontrolled medical conditions) to tolerate the procedure, anesthesia, and recovery period. Also, it is important the patient has reasonable expectations of the procedure and its outcomes.

When Dr. Lowney evaluates a candidate for a body sculpting procedure like CoolSculpting or facial rejuvenation with Botox, he reviews their medical record, noting any health conditions, previous surgeries, or other risk factors. He also inquires about the candidate’s treatment goals to determine whether they are fit for the procedure. Candidates must realize that treatments like Botox may minimize signs of aging, but they won’t make the candidate look like a teenager again. If the candidate’s goals are not realistic, Dr. Lowney will address this during consultation.

PLASTIC SURGERY ON THE RISE IN ADULTS 65+

Statistics reveal cosmetic surgery is actually quite popular amongst an older crowd. Thanks to a longer life expectancy, advances in technology and techniques, and changing cultural attitudes toward cosmetic surgery, more adults over the age of 65 are pursuing cosmetic enhancement. Adults are working and living longer than ever, and many places a high value on their physical appearance.

Rejuvenating the face or body with cosmetic surgery can help older adults stay competitive in the workplace, celebrate retirement, feel more confident on the dating scene, and mirror a youthful, active spirit.
