The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery is an authority on global trends in plastic surgery. Their 2015 procedural statistics — tabulated from the responses to surveys sent to more than 35,000 plastic surgeons — confirm what many suspected. The number of individuals finding value in cosmetic surgery is on the rise worldwide.

Dr. Mark X. Lowney, a cosmetic surgeon at Advanced Body Sculpting of New England in Fall River, Mass., delves deeper into the ISAPS findings here.

1 MILLION MORE REPORTED COSMETIC PROCEDURES IN 2015

According to the ISAPS, there were more than 21 million surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures performed in 2015; this reflects an increase of more than 1 million from the previous year.

The United States had the highest total number of surgical and non-surgical procedures, followed by Brazil, South Korea, India, and Mexico. The U.S. accounted for 14.7 percent of the total procedures performed, with Brazil accounting for 12.7 percent, Mexico at 4.8 percent, South Korea at 4.6 percent, and India at 4.4 percent.

MOST COMMONLY PERFORMED PROCEDURES

The most commonly performed surgical procedures were breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery, and abdominoplasty (in that order). The most commonly performed non-surgical procedures were botulinum toxin injections, hyaluronic acid injections, hair removal, photo rejuvenation, and non-surgical fat reduction.

The most popular procedure overall was botulinum toxin injectables (including treatment with Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin).

PATIENT DEMOGRAPHICS

Women underwent more than 18 million surgical and non-surgical procedures in 2015, which was more than 85 percent of the total procedures performed. Among women, the top five surgical procedures performed were breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery, tummy tuck, and rhinoplasty.

Men had over 3 million procedures performed, accounting for 14.4 percent of the total procedures performed. The top five surgical procedures among men were eyelid surgery, liposuction, breast reduction (for gynecomastia), rhinoplasty, and fat grafting.
