This February, don’t be afraid to break up with unwanted belly fat. If diet and exercise aren’t giving you the flat or toned abdomen you desire, it might be time to start seeing someone else. Dr. Mark Lowney, a cosmetic surgeon at Advanced Body Sculpting of New England in Fall River, Mass., offers several types of treatments designed to reduce belly fat and sculpt a lean abdomen.

LIPOSUCTION

Liposuction is the gold standard of body fat reduction. Many of Dr. Lowney’s liposuction patients want to de-bulk upper or lower abdominal areas that won’t respond to diet or exercise efforts.

Modern liposuction typically involves anesthesia for a comfortable patient experience. The treatment area can be injected with a “tumescent” solution, containing sterile saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine, which firms up the fat in the targeted area and makes it easier to remove. This solution also reduces bleeding and post-operative discomfort.

The fat is carefully broken up and removed from the body with gentle suction. After healing, the treated area looks flatter, firmer, and more proportional to the rest of the body.

Liposuction is good for more than abdominal fat. It can also be used to reshape the following areas:

  • hips
  • buttocks
  • upper back
  • inner and outer thighs
  • upper arms
  • chin
  • neck
  • knees
  • male chest
  • mons pubis

SMARTLIPO

Patients that do not want or need surgery may opt for SmartLipo, a laser-assisted liposuction system. SmartLipo uses a tiny laser fiber to break up and liquefy unwanted fat. In liquid form, the fat is easier to remove; this makes recovery quicker and less painful.

SmartLipo has an additional benefit not seen with traditional liposuction: The heat from the laser actually causes the skin in the treatment area to contract, so it looks smoother and tighter.

COOLSCULPTING

CoolSculpting is another non-surgical fat reduction treatment. It involves freezing unwanted fat using controlled cooling. The frozen fat cells eventually die and are naturally eliminated from the body. Over time, the treated area looks sculpted and toned. CoolSculpting is FDA-approved and studies have shown up to 20 percent fat reduction in a single visit. Treatments can be performed in Dr. Lowney’s office without anesthesia.
